LIBS 4400 - Introduction to Bilingual Education and Language Acquisition for Multilingual Learners3 unit(s) Course will provide an overview of theory, methods and assessment for bilingual education contexts. Students will develop foundational understandings in the following: (1) the cultural origins of language and literacy in a pluralistic society; (2) the historical and socio-political development of bilingual education in the United States, including but not limited to - program models, language instruction, and bilingual education policy; (3) methods for teaching language instruction to native and non-native speakers of the English and the target language; (4) knowledge of inter-relatedness of language acquisition theory, language domains, language structure, forms and functions to deliver effective instruction in bilingual settings; (5) methods for teaching content instruction using English and the target language; (6) assessment development in English and the target language; and (7) techniques to differentiate instruction for students with special needs and exceptional students. Students seeking a bilingual authorization are strongly encouraged to take this course.
