MUS 3621 - Collaborative Piano and Accompanying II2 unit(s) Collaborative Piano / Accompanying II serves as continuation of Collaborative Piano / Accompanying I, with the objective of further developing the student’s ability, skill, technique, and experience in collaborative playing and piano accompanying as well as expanding his/her knowledge base in mixed-media vocal and instrumental repertoire. Students are assigned vocal/piano and instrumental/piano repertoire for study, practice, and performance with other students and/or in other classes. Techniques of shared musical leadership, collaborative musicianship, musical study and interpretation, ensemble balance, rehearsing, and performance are addressed through masterclass-style coaching of prepared repertoire. On a musical level, emphasis is placed on understanding the art of collaboration from multiple perspectives: study of musical scores, musical concepts, concepts of musical partnership, and pianistic technique are addressed with regard for textual and textural concerns in musical interpretation, instrumental and vocal needs, and musical partnership in performance interpretation. Concurrent training and additional instruction will be given to develop sightreading skills and accompanying capacity, with assignments drawn from closed and open ensemble scores, piano reductions of orchestral scores, and piano scores with components useful for honing accompanimental skill. May be repeated for a total of eight (8) units.
Prerequisites: MUS 3620 or by consent of instructor if student is not a piano major.
