Jurisprudence, Law and Society concerns the social, ethical, and political foundations of law and legal practice. It combines jurisprudence (legal theory) with an examination of the societal forces that generate statutes, case law and regulations. It is primarily concerned with the meaning and nature of law, law’s relationship to morality, the ordering of legal systems and institutions, and the use of legal reasoning. Students are expected to learn the various legal theories and the arguments supporting them, and should be able to explain whether and how legal theory is capable of promoting justice in diverse and pluralistic societies.

Prerequisites: CJ 2250 and 2280 or consent of instructor.
