ENGL 4320 - African American Literature and Cultural Studies3 unit(s) Course serves as an introduction to African American literature and cultural studies. Students will examine issues related to the construction of African American identities and develop an understanding of the national cultural processes that impact the lives and experiences of African Americans. Students will practice reading literature, cinema, and media through historical and cultural contexts that emphasize interdisciplinary approaches and focus on issues within African American communities including racial discrimination, gender, labor, class, regionalism, environmental concerns, language, sexuality, and religion. Open to Juniors and Seniors only.
Satisfies G.E. area UD-C and the Multicultural Requirement.
Prerequisites: Completion of General Education Area C2 and upper-division standing.
