ETHS 2000 - Introduction to Black/African American Studies3 unit(s) This lower-division interdisciplinary course examines how Black/African American Studies emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s during an intensified political context in the U.S. and around the world. Students, faculty, and community members organized to improve their realities, which included establishing and institutionalizing the field in higher education. Grounded in this history, the course introduces students to: 1) the origins and contours of Black/African American Studies; 2) the social context that influenced Black/African American protest movements of the 1960s; 3) activist movements of Black/African American communities through regional, national, and/or global perspectives; and 4) the value of Black/African American scholarship, creativity, and social change.
Satisfies G.E. area D2 or area F and the Multicultural Requirement.
