MUS 4452 - Piano Literature I

A survey of early keyboard music and piano literature from the late 16th century to the early 19th century, with an emphasis on major works of primary composers from the Baroque, Classical, pre-Romantic, and early Romantic eras.  Examination of major composers and their significant musical contributions; important and representative pieces of keyboard literature with formal, interpretive, and performance analysis; the development of important genres, forms, and styles of music; developments in keyboard technology and systems of tuning and temperament; compositional and performance practice as relates to the period instrumentation and musical aesthetics; the rise of national and individual styles; and philosophies of major musical and theoretical developments.

Prerequisites: MUS 2220.
