Beginning with slavery, the course will explore a range of topics, including the significance of literacy acquisition for bonded men and women, black school development and pedagogy as a survival response to white supremacy, and the specific cultural and instructional issues that emerge for teachers dealing with black children in different cultural and educational settings. Students will develop an appreciation for the role of education in African American struggle and also develop skills of intercultural competency for teaching African American children.
