The certificate in TESOL is intended for graduates and undergraduates with majors or minors in English who wish to have minimum preparation to teach English to adult speakers of other languages. The TESOL certificate is particularly appropriate for those who would teach English in postsecondary language institutes overseas. The TESOL certificate program consists of six TESOL-related courses (19 units). Fluency in both written and spoken English is required of non-native English speakers. The certificate is not a California state teaching credential. (Individuals seeking credentials to teach in California public schools should inquire at the Department of Teacher Education.) For further information concerning the TESOL certificate and master's programs, consult the TESOL program adviser in the Department of English.
