Note: There are no “catalog rights” in credential programs. Requirements, subject to change, are set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the California State University, and CSU Stanislaus. Students must meet the current state requirements for the credential. The Single Subject Credential Programs (SSCP) is field-centered and performance-based. Theory and practice are integrated by providing ongoing experiences within public school settings. The focus is on the attainment of knowledge, skills, and characteristics of effective teaching. Students are at a school site daily for field experiences and complete coursework for the entire academic year. The program admits students in fall and spring semesters.
Candidates may apply for an internship in place of traditional student teaching. Interns have a contract with a school district and teach a minimum of three periods a day with a maximum of full-time teaching.
Candidates fluent in Spanish, Hmong, Khmer, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Arabic and Farsi may earn a Bilingual Cross-cultural Academic and Language Development (BCLAD) Authorization.
- Application for Admission to the CSU Stanislaus Graduate School and the Credential Program requires separate applications and fees.
- Graduate School Admission – Apply to the graduate school as a post-baccalaureate student online through http://www.csumentor.edu. There is currently a fee and official transcripts are required. Continuing Stanislaus students should apply to the Graduate School at the end of their senior year.
- Credential applications are available online at www.csustan.edu/Credentials.html or at the Credential Services Office in DBH 303, or (209) 667-3534. The application folder must be completed and submitted early in the semester preceding admission to the program. There is a fee for submitting the application. See application for specific dates and directions.
- Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirements
The required GPA is 2.75 in the last 60 units or 2.67 overall.
- Special Admittance Criteria – The Department is allowed to admit a small number of students who do not meet admittance requirements. The criterion for special admittance is at the sole discretion of the Department of Teacher Education. Candidates who are below the minimum GPA according to the criteria must submit a letter noting the exception and requesting special consideration. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.67 in the last 60 units. Admission for such candidates will be determined based on the following:
- Date of application
- Successful program interview
- Special skills that would benefit the candidate as a teacher
- Number of co-requisite courses already completed
- Quality of recommendations
- Quality of application letter of intent
- Experience working with youth
- Writing Sample
- Tuberculosis Clearance - Students must show proof of having completed a screening for tuberculosis in the last 4 years.
- Students must submit fingerprints via “Livescan” when they apply for the program. The “Livescan” form (fingerprints) is available in the Credential Services office or on their website at www.csustan.edu/Credentials.html and will be electronically forwarded to CCTC. The clearance is processed through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and is filled out online at www.ctc.ca.gov. Background checks are conducted by the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). When “cleared,” a student will receive an email verifying the “Certificate of Clearance.”
- Completion of Subject Matter Preparation Program or passage of CSET. Candidates must fulfill the subject matter competency requirement before they can be accepted into the program. Students who have completed an approved Subject Matter Preparation Program elsewhere or passed the CCTC-approved examinations in these subjects may apply to the credential program. - Basic Skills Requirement applicants must submit proof of passage of ONE of the following options OR registration for option a: a) CBEST EXAM (all 3 sections and passage is required prior to the start of the semester for which an application was submitted), b) CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP-English and Math taken in spring of 11th grade with a “College Ready” or Exempt score), or c) CSU Placement Examinations-English Placement Test (EPT) with a score of 151 and Entry Level Math (ELM) with a score of 50).
- Early Field Experience – Candidates are required to have a minimum of 45 hours of documented field experience with students at 7-12 grade levels prior to being admitted to program.
- Entry-Level Computer Competency – This requirement can be satisfied in one of two ways: 1) by completing an approved computer course, or 2) by submitting documentation that demonstrates knowledge of word processing, internet usage, presentation software, and email usage.
- English Composition – All CSU Stanislaus graduates will have met this requirement as part of their BA/BS degree. It can be demonstrated by any one of three options: 1) Completion of a CSU WP class as part of the undergraduate program (verified by transcripts), 2) Obtaining a 41 or better on the writing portion of the CBEST, or 3) Completing an upper division composition course with a grade of C or better.
- American/Government Constitution – This requirement can be met by taking PSCI 1201 at CSU, Stanislaus or an equivalent course that covers the U.S. Constitution.
- Second Language Experience – Can be met by one of the five options: 1) Completion of 3 semester units of a language other than English at the college level with a passing grade, 2) Completion of one year of another language other than English at the high school level with a passing grade, 3) Completion of HILT (High Intensity Language Training) Program, 4) Other life experiences that demonstrate second language acquisition, or 5) EDUC 4460 meets this requirement for Spanish-Bilingual students.
The following courses must be taken and/or in progress prior to applying to the program.

Note: To begin coursework in the program, candidates must have met the “Basic Skills Requirement,” met the “Subject Matter Competency” through CSET or a “waiver “ program, and passed EDSC 3900 and Adolescent Psychology.

*Preliminary Educational Technology Requirement
The Preliminary Educational Technology Requirement can be met in one of two ways:
- Pass the two subtests of the CSET Preliminary Educational Technology Requirement Examination (133 & 134)
- Take EDIT 4170 Educational Technology Foundations course for 2 units after admission to the credential program.

Single Subject Credential Program - Bilingual Authorization
- Bilingual Authorization prepares holders to teach in bilingual as well as English-only classrooms.
- The Bilingual Authorization is available in the following languages: Spanish, Lao, Hmong, Khmer, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Farsi, or Arabic.
- Candidates for the bilingual authorization credential must be able to speak, read, and write in the target language. Candidates wishing to earn the Bilingual Authorization for languages other than Spanish should take the CSET LOTE exams in the target language and culture.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

Teacher Performance Assessments (TPA)
Teacher candidates must complete and pass the four CA TPA tasks. The coursework within the Credential Program will prepare students for the CA TPAs.
