SOCL 4500 - Sociology of Pseudoscience, Misinformation, and Conspiracy Theories

Examination of pseudoscience, misinformation, conspiracy theories, and other unwarranted beliefs from a sociological lens. Explores basic features of these claims, how they spread, why they appeal to individuals and groups, and their political and social impact on society. Students will apply this new knowledge to improve their understanding of people’s belief systems, and better respond to social challenges resulting from the adoption of these beliefs

Students will be able to:

Identify the basic features of different conspiracy theories and their variability across different social contexts (PLO #1);
Discuss conspiracy theories as a social phenomenon with consequences for society (PLO #2, PLO #6);
Distinguish between science and pseudoscience within the context of debates within the philosophy and history of science (PLO #3, PLO #5);
Identify various types of misinformation and disinformation and understand their consequences for society and democracy (PLO #6);
Investigate the scientific literature on conspiracy beliefs, pseudoscience, and mis/disinformation (PLO #7);
Critically analyze various scientific and non-scientific truth-claims, and draw their own conclusions based on credible evidence (PLO #5); and,
Collect and present data about people’s beliefs in a non-judgmental way, using established social science research methods (PLO #7, PLO #9).
