GEOL 4500 - Field Geology (WP)

(5 Units)
Four projects, up to one week in length each, allow for experience in measurement of stratigraphic sections, and mapping in faulted and folded sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and in areas underlain by intrusive and metamorphic rocks.  Lab serves to review scientific writing strategies, and geologic field and laboratory techniques.  The first two weeks of field work are immediately before the start of the Spring term, followed by weekly labs during the term, and in turn followed by the last two weeks of field work immediately after the end of the Spring term.  Students will prepare a report for each field project, to synthesize the field data and present a professional geologic map and cross-sections.

Satisfies upper-division writing proficiency requirement.

Prerequisites: Completion of the Writing Proficiency Screening Test with a passing score and GEOL 4360.

Hours: (Laboratory, 3 hours; activity, 8 hours)
