The University offers a rich mix of 43 undergraduate majors and 23 graduate programs (15 master’s programs, seven post-graduate credentials, and a doctorate in educational leadership). Programs are offered at the Turlock campus and the Stanislaus State Stockton Center . Additionally, University Extended Education represents Stanislaus State as a self-support division that offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, professional development courses and certificates, and international education opportunities at both the Turlock campus and the Stockton Center, as well as through hybrid and fully online modes of instruction. The highly accessible faculty is renowned for teaching, research, and service. More than 80 percent of full-time faculty are tenured or on tenure track. Approximately 85 percent of full-time faculty hold a doctorate or other terminal degree. As of fall 2016, there were a total of 642 instructional faculty.

Outstanding Professor
Dr. Elmano Costa
Dr. Elmano Costa, Professor of Teacher Education, has been selected as the Outstanding Professor. Numerous letters from faculty, staff and students spoke of his passion and dedication for teaching and learning. He is well respected and admired by his colleagues; they, in turn, wrote about the ways Dr. Costa inspires them to become better teachers and to excel by pursuing all that is possible in the field of education. His colleague, Dr. Michael Uretsky, wrote the following:
Dr. Costa is truly an exceptional professor who possesses a passion for teaching and the strongest commitment to helping students. He is one of the finest educators that I have ever come across. His students consistently share extremely positive comments about their experiences in his classes. He is known for implementing highly effective teaching strategies, communicating information in a clear manner, and maximizing instructional time.
Outstanding Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Professor
Dr. Elvin Alemán
Dr. Elvin Alemán, Associate Professor of Chemistry, has been selected as the Outstanding Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Professor. His contributions to his department, college, and the university are significant. A former student, Jing Lee, now a Graduate Student at the University of Washington elaborated on his outstanding scholarship and service to students:
During the two years I worked with Dr. Alemán, I gained valuable lab skills that help me succeed in both college and graduate school. Dr. Alemán always took our lab group to conferences. At the conferences, I got the opportunity to present my project and talk to other experts in the field and exchange ideas with scientists. It was after attending the many conferences, that I learned to be proud of being a chemist, something that Dr. Alemán told me the first time I met him.
Outstanding Community Service Professor
There were no nominations for Outstanding Community Service Professor for the academic year 2016-2017.
Outstanding Service in Faculty Governance Award
Dr. Stuart Sims
Stuart Sims, Professor of Music, has been selected as the Outstanding Service in Faculty Governance Professor. Dr. Sims has a distinguished record of active and engaged participation in faculty governance and an extensive list of governance achievements and selected initiatives exemplify the criteria established for this award. He is currently serves as Speaker of the Faculty for the Academic Senate. During his successful career at Stanislaus State he has consistently demonstrated his dedication to faculty governance. One colleague, Dr. John Garcia, described Dr. Sims as follows:
In all of his governance work, Dr. Sims has been respectful and interested in others’ opinions, offered thought-provoking ideas in a non-threatening manner, shown the ability to keep others focused on the task at hand, and demonstrated the capacity to change direction when others have offered a more viable path.
Elizabeth Anne B. Papageorge Faculty Development Award
Dr. Christopher Claus
Dr. Christopher Claus, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, has been selected as the recipient of the Elizabeth Anne B. Papageorge Faculty Development Award. It was clearly communicated through the many letters received from his peers and students that Dr. Claus relates well and works collaboratively with students and colleagues to promote social justice; further, he is dedicated to assisting all students in the pursuit of their educational dreams. His teaching philosophy is certainly student-centered and rests on the core values of involvement, collaboration, application and challenge. His colleague, Dr. Keith Nainby, described him as follows:
Perhaps the most distinctive dimension of Dr. Claus’s probationary profile thus far is the tightly woven, principle-based integration among his teaching and advising responsibilities, his research program and his service efforts. As an educator Dr. Claus attends to concrete applications of course material and, especially, challenges students to reach beyond their (and others’) established levels of academic goal-setting and achievement.
Vasché Library

The mission of the University’s Vasché Library is to provide access to information resources and services that facilitate teaching, learning, and research, and to provide an environment that encourages and enables those in our diverse community to expand their intellectual, cultural and artistic horizons. The collections of the University Library include more than 370,000 volumes, 841 print journal subscriptions, access to 141 electronic databases, and a growing number of electronic journals, video recordings, and compact discs. There are also more than 7,000 e-books from which to choose. Approximately 5,000 books are acquired each year. Since 1965, the library has been a partial depository of federal, state and local documents. Other special collections include the University archive, with documents on local and University history, and the juvenile collection, which has more than 6,000 volumes of award-winning and notable titles in children’s literature and the Francis Sargis Modern Assyrian Heritage Collection.
